Using Drupal Invite to go viral

This weekend I implemented the Drupal Invite module to the site. I think this could be a good method to “go viral” by having other members get GuG-Points by inviting new members to the site. Members that get enough GuG-Points get free access into our private forums.
Drupal Invite is a simple module that allows members to send invitations to join the website, and tracks the status of each invite that the user has sent. You can limit the number of invites available to users via user-roles. For example our “Trusted” members get 20 invites, while “regular” members only get 5. Another nice thing about the Drupal Invite is that it plays nice with other modules such as the Buddie List module and the Drupal UserPoints module.
Installation of Drupal Invite was as smooth and easy as most other 4.7 modules, and configuration only took a few minutes. One thing I forgot and did not realize until later, is that you must grant access-control to all roles that you want to have access to sending invites (d’oh!).
Hopefully the use of Drupal Invite is just one more small step in making the site more of a Social Networking type site. Even though when we first put the site online, we never would have imaged our site would be anything near a social network.
