Steal A Good Idea But Don’t Look Like An Idiot

Earlier today I made a post titled “Steal A Good Idea And Make It Better“. In that post I gloated over how I got an idea from Gary Conn and through shear genius on my part, made it even better, making life better for bloggers all over the world.

The only problem with my great, amazing, life-changing idea is that it does not work! I could have just deleted the post and pretended like it never happened, but what kind of a man would I be if I did that? Instead I’m making another post about it and turning it into a learning experience… Besides, I had already sent an email to Gary Conn bragging about my find before I realized it didn’t work.

Most of us (well, me at least) make mistakes of one size or another every day. Many people like to pretend that their perfect and act like they never make mistakes, but many of us act like we’re perfect because we make mistakes – and learn from them. I think that recognizing and acknowledging your mistakes is one of the greatest ways to learn and grow. And besides, everybody hates a know-it-all that always thinks they’re right – even when they’re wrong.

So here’s what I learned:

A simple lesson really – Don’t go shooting off your mouth (or make posts in your blog) until you KNOW you’re right. Slow down, take the extra time to (throughly) test your work and then go brag about it.

So, I phucked up – my great idea did not work – sorry Gary, I’m not smarter than you after all.. Well.. maybe I am, but I just can’t prove it yet. :-)

But here is what DOES work: It’s not as pretty as Gary’s idea, but it does make it easier for your RSS subscribers to comment on your posts directly from their RSS reader. If you use FeedBurner for your feeds (and you should be), activate the “Comment Count” option in your FeedFlair settings. This will add a comment link at the bottom of your RSS feed without having to go through all the hassle of pasting the code manually, thereby saving you 30-45 seconds of your valuable time.

..I also just got an infraction at DP Forums .. Sucks to be me today :-(

Got something to say? Post it!

  1. Oh my goodness… you’re a live wire! These two posts along with my post are awesome. This is how things eventually get done. See what will happen now, is some 14 years PHP genius is going to pick up on these posts and create what we need and then release it in the form of a public WordPress Plugin and then life will all be good as we know it. :)

Take care man.. and thanks for having fun with me! Eventually someone will figure out what we want and make it for us. :)

  2. What also didn’t work in your rush was the little fact that you just screwed up your blog layout in the last post. By both having a huge image that isn’t suited for your blog layout and by removing the comments you have just ruined your page.

    Good luck fixing it

This was not an aggravated comment, but merely a quickly written note as I am about to rush out the door to my own appointment… bye ;)

I’m 0 for 3 today.. But now I have learned and grown just a bit more.. Good thing it only took 45 seconds to fix that image and post.

  4. I agree completely. It’s so idiotic that people just rip out websites templates and content and some even forget the change the “Contact Us” :D
